CWMS Weekly Announcements from Mr. Lancerio

CWMS Announcements - Week of 02/23/2026
Good evening, Falcon Family.  This is Ebenezer Lancerio, the principal of Central Wilkes Middle School. I send these weekly announcements to you with a heavy heart for everyone in our school system in the wake of Mr. Mark Byrd’s death. Mr. Byrd was a superintendent that championed and advocated for all students in our school system. He will be greatly missed by everyone at Central Wilkes Middle School. My number one priority as the principal of CWMS is to support all of the people in our building - the most important being your children - during this difficult time. Please see below for specific information regarding our approach and more information detailing weekly school events, which we are committing to maintaining.

Student support tomorrow Monday, 2/23 New
CWMS administration and staff members will be available in the morning and throughout the school day to provide care and support for students impacted by the loss of Mr. Mark Byrd, our former superintendent of Wilkes County Schools. Mr. Lancerio plans to address all students and staff in the morning. Afterwards, students and staff will have the opportunity to hold discussion in classrooms prior to starting the school day on a normal schedule. Wilkes County Schools also acknowledges that loss affects everyone differently, and that no one should have to face it alone. They ask all of those heavily impacted to seek care, comfort, and support at Jodie Province Counseling Services. Please feel free to share this information for anyone that needs it.

Progress Reports sent out tomorrow, Monday, 2/23
Our Q3 progress reports will be sent home on Monday, 2/23. These grades and progress reports can also be seen on Infinite Campus at any point throughout the school year.
100 Days of School Day tomorrow, Monday, 2/23 New
In observance of the 100 days of school, students and staff will all dress up in our best 100-year old’s attire. Dress in your best!

Spring Sports Tryouts Update
Girl’s Soccer tryouts are tomorrow, Monday, February 23rd between 4pm and 6pm. All athletes trying out will need to have everything completed on DragonFly and must be eligible to compete by having passed 5/7 classes and having missed no less than 13 days of school in the first semester. Eligibility will be determined if your child makes the team, so be sure to confirm that your child is eligible to try out for the team before they try out.

Inclement Weather Protocols
Winter is here, and with it a potential for inclement weather days. Please see our inclement weather protocols. Here are some key points from the weather protocols:
There are two kinds of inclement weather days - Remote Learning Days and No School Days. Please be sure to double check the language used for the specific day assigned to an inclement weather day to ensure you know the protocol.

No School Days mean that your child does not have to complete homework on that day and they are not supposed to check in for attendance purposes. This day is treated like a Holiday.
Remote Learning Days mean that your child has to complete remote learning day activities and check in via email, Remind, or Zoom in order to be counted present for that day.

On a two hour delay, your child’s bus will arrive two hours late.
Every effort will be made to make the call the day before, but this may not always be possible.
There is an extensive process for making the call to modify or cancel a school day. The entire process is outlined in the letter attached to this email.

YMCA ACCESS Tutoring Program
Does your child need help in their classes? YMCA Access Academy, a FREE tutoring program, is partnering with CWMS to help! We will have some of our own certified teachers providing tutoring instruction. Printed applications are available at the school.
