Notifications to Parents

AHERA Notification
The EPA requires all school systems to notify parents of Asbestos in Schools even if your
School has no known asbestos. This notification needs to be sent out each year to parents
at the beginning of school. You may include it in the booklet sent out at the beginning of
each year or by a single memo. To follow is an example of the AHERA notification.
Example:
AHERA Notification
The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) requires educational agencies
to inform employees, parents and students regarding certain asbestos related activities.
These include the availability of management plans, re-inspections, periodic surveillance
and response actions.
The AHERA Management plan is available for public inspection at each school office,
the central administrative office and the maintenance department.
Total re-inspections are conducted every three years and a periodic surveillance is
conducted every six months. All response actions needed to maintain or control asbestos
containing materials are carried out by the state accredited personnel or properly trained
maintenance personnel.
IPM Letter to Parents

Dear Parent or Guardian,

The School Children’s Health Act requires all North Carolina school
districts to notify parents and guardians of pesticides that they expect will be
applied during the upcoming year. We want to notify you that the following
pesticides will be used at your child’s school this year.

Name of Pesticide / Product Active Ingredient(s)
DuPont Advion Ant Gel / Indoxacarb (S-Enantiomer)
Prescrip. Treatment Cy-Kick CS / Cyfluthrin
Talstar Professional Insecticide / Bifenthrin
MaxForce Roach Bait Gel / Fipronil
Contrac All Weather Blox / Bromadiolone

Wilkes County Schools is implementing an Integrated Pest Management
(IPM) program. This can help reduce or even eliminate the risks of
pesticides by using simple, low-cost methods. With proper training, planning
and effective communication among affected parties, IPM can prevent pest
problems, reduce the need for pesticide application and greatly improve
quality of the school environment.
If you have any questions, please contact Bergie Speaks, Maintenance
Director, at (336) 667-2021 ext. 24.

Subject: Important: Required Student Safety Video for 2025-2026 School Year

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We hope you are enjoying a safe and restful summer. As part of our commitment to student

safety and well-being, and in compliance with a new law, North Carolina General Statute 143B-

1209.100, all public school students in grades 6-12 will be shown a safety awareness video

during the upcoming school year. The video is required to be shown within the first five (5) days

of the school year.

This video is designed to educate students on recognizing, avoiding, and reporting unsafe

situations, particularly focusing on “grooming activities.” The videos do not discuss abuse,

neglect, human trafficking and/or exploitation which are all extremely serious issues outside

the school context. Thus, we encourage all parents and guardians to review the video(s) in

advance of the new school year. Doing so will give you a better understanding of what your

child will be learning and help support conversations at home about personal safety.

The video(s) can be accessed through the  N.C. Center for Safer Schools.

Although the videos focus on examples in schools, the information applies to all aspects of

your student’s life. We encourage you to discuss these issues openly with your student. Please

note that per N.C. law, potential student abuse, neglect and/or exploitation situations

occurring outside of school are handled by DSS, while potential inappropriate conduct by school

employees is handled by the school administration and law enforcement. All such allegations

are thoroughly investigated.

If you have any questions or concerns about your student viewing these videos, please

contact me at [email protected] prior to the start of the 2025-2026 school year so

that we may discuss your concerns and explore alternative options if needed.

Please note that school board policy 4240/7312 provides clear guidance on how to report

various forms of misconduct by adults with children in all settings, both in and out of school.

Thank you for your continued support in keeping our students informed and safe.

Sincerely,

Ebenezer Lancerio

Principal
